I graduated as a materials engineer in 2011 at Ghent University and started working on my own academic research project the year after to satisfy my interest in R&D. I had the opportunity to start a joint PhD between the Department of Textiles at Ghent University (UGent-Tex), and FYSC at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), under the supervision of Prof. K. De Clerck (UGent) and Prof. H. Rahier (VUB). This allows us to combine the expertise on electrospinning and dye technology of UGent-Tex with the knowledge on physicochemistry and thermal characterization of polymer products.
Within my PhD, polymer blend nanofibers for biomedical and sensor applications are studied using a wide variety of materials characterization techniques, such as differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, dynamic vapor sorption, oscillation rheology, X-ray diffractometry, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, etc. I am currently in the final stages of my research, after which I would like to use this expertise in industrial projects.
