Onderzoek

In order to meet the demands for concrete in terms of durability, innovation in concrete technology is necessary. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), characterized by a very low water-to-cement ratio together with a high amount of fine-sized powders, is one of pathways leading to an increase in durability and mechanical properties. However, the risk for autogenous shrinkage and cracking due to restrained shrinkage is likely to occur in these systems. The durability of the UHPC may thereby decrease, as cracks form pathways for ingress of aggressive liquids and gases. To prevent these negative features, superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are added to the mixture. SAPs have the ability to absorb up to 500 times their own weight in aqueous solutions. During mixing, the SAPs will take up part of the mixing water. Upon hydration, the water will be released towards the surrounding cementitious matrix to counteract autogenous shrinkage by means of internal curing. To monitor the internal curing, when SAPs are included in mortar, and the resulting decrease in autogenous shrinkage induced crack formation, traditional shrinkage measurement methods will be combined with non-destructive techniques.
