Dreda Say Mitchell

Dreda Say Mitchell is a novelist as well as a broadcaster, journalist, freelance education consultant and motivational speaker. She was born in London’s East End in 1965 to Grenadian immigrants. She holds a BA degree in African history from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from University College London, and an MA in Education from London Metropolitan University.

In 2005 Mitchell’s debut novel Running Hot was awarded the Crime Writer Association’s John Creasey Dagger for best British first-time crime novel. Her subsequent novels, too, have received wide acclaim: Killer Tune (2007), the Gangland Girls Trilogy (Geezer Girls (2009); Gangster Girl (2010); Hit Girls ((2011); published as a Kindle omnibus in 2016); the Rio Wray and Mac trilogy (Vendetta (2014); Death Trap (2015); Snatched (2015)) and the Flesh and Blood Trilogy (Blood Sister (2016); Blood Mother (2017) and Blood Daughter (2017)).

She also contributed to the award-winning anthology Books to Die For, edited by John Connolly and Declan Burke and to the Mystery Writers of America’s anthology Vengeance, edited by Lee Child. She also has written for British quality newspapers as well as for the radio. She makes regular appearances on radio and television, including as a guest on the newspaper review section of Stephen Nolan’s show on BBC Radio 5 Live and as a guest commentator for the BBC World Service’s coverage of the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.  

She was the book judge for the Index on Censorship awards (2007) and is a patron of the SI Leeds Literary Prize for unpublished fiction by Black and Asian women in the UK.
