General Strategic Plan

The Board of Directors of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel gave the green light for the General Strategic Plan 2009-2012 on July 1, 2009. Drawing up this ambitious plan for the future was not taken lightly by the university. The presentation of the Strategic Plan was preceded by a thorough and long preparation period, and essential contributions from all faculties and departments of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel were incorporated.

Strong response to future challenges

The objective of the General Strategic Plan is clear: to provide a strong response to the many challenges the university is currently facing. The plan reflects our vision of the future within a continuously changing environment. What is our position in the revised higher education landscape in Flanders, how do we respond to globalisation, and how can we better benefit from our central location?

These and other questions require an effective reply. We must attract more students, we must build and renovate, internationalise, perform better and, last but not least, remain financially healthy.

Our mission

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is a competitive, high-quality, socially committed and internationally-oriented university located in Brussels.

Our values

  • Critical thinking and free research
  • Formation of and respect for the holistic person
  • Equal opportunities and diversity
  • Openness and tolerance
  • Social commitment from a non-dogmatic humanistic perspective
  • Sustainability
  • Quality and professionalism
  • Innovation and creativity

The core activities of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel are education, research and social services. The university has more than 9,000 students and more than 150 research groups, including research groups that are absolute world leaders in their field. The UZ Brussel (University Hospital Brussels) records about 20,000 out-patients and 27,000 hospitalised patients a year. We aim to co-create the future of the society in which we live by providing education, research and social services.

The steps we will take

In order to achieve its mission, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will resolutely focus on three major pillars or strategic entities:

  1. The further development of an excellent Dutch-speaking university in Brussels via a unique education concept

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel will cooperate on a preferential basis with its alliance partner, the Ghent University, in order to strengthen a number of Master programmes, as well as to mutually support each other’s research.

  2. Further development of a (bio)medical university campus in Jette

Aware of its social significance for Flanders and for Brussels, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will develop the (bio)medical campus in Jette into a competitive University Medical Centre through additional investments.

  3. The foundation of an international Brussels University Alliance

On the basis of its unique position in the capital of Europe, and the historic relationship with the Université Libre de Bruxelles (supplemented by its alliance and association partners), the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will concentrate its efforts on pushing internationalisation forwards.

We will play the card of internationalisation

Attractive English programmes

In Brussels, The Vrije Universiteit Brussel will take the lead in recruiting high-level international students and professors by offering an attractive, international and English language education portfolio.

Brussels University Alliance

The presence of foreign students and researchers must also benefit the Flemish students and researchers on our own campuses. In this way, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will gain the status of a broadly international university, where international communities consisting of experts and experts-to-be work together in educational and research programmes with one common objective: sustainable innovation. This project will be named the “Brussels University Alliance”.

Stronger together with partners

The Brussels University Alliance is a particularly ambitious project, including in financial terms. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel cannot support this project on its own. For this reason, we need partners to strategically strengthen the portfolio. This relates in the first place to our sister university, Université Libre de Bruxelles, the Vesalius College and our association partner, the Erasmushogeschool Brussel.
