Development of an atmos-pheric pressure plasma process for the generation of antimicrobial coatings on steel

Bacterial growth, proliferation on surfaces and resistance is a major problem which
follows an increasing trend in spite of more severe regulations in hygiene and production
processes. Nowadays, surface modification and coating have become essential steps in
material processing enabling both the conservation of bulk properties and the protection
of the surface placed in hostile environment via the deposition of a protective layer and
generation of new functional groups.
In addition, atmospheric plasma processing may represent a more environmentally
friendly alternative to the actual coating deposition methods which are wet-chemical

The aim of this work was to generate antibacterial layers on steel surface -using organic
and organosilicon compounds- which activity will be based on a contact killing
Two synthesis strategies were followed in this PhD, namely the generation of new
functionalities and the conservation of groups of interest into the coating throughout the
deposition process.
