The Institute for European Studies (IES) and the Fundamental Rights and Constitutionalism Research Group (FRC) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel kindly invite you to an Expert Seminar entitled 'The Role of the Prosecutor in the Emerging Practice of the International Criminal Court', to be held on October 24, 2013.

During the expert seminar, leading experts and practitioners in the field of International Criminal Justice, including ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda herself, will give an overview and critically assess the role of the ICC Prosecutor and the challenges her Office are currently facing. The ICC Prosecutor is a crucial actor within the framework of the International Criminal Court. The Prosecution shapes the tribunal’s practice and legacy more than any other organ. The Prosecutor is the public face of the Court and it is the Prosecutor whom ‘war criminals’ fear most and it is in the Prosecutor that victims vest their hopes. The voice that addresses public opinion through the media is most often that of the Prosecutor.

Recently Ms. Bensouda wrote the preface of the Code of International Criminal Law and Procedure, annotated, a Code which compiles annotations of the ICC, ICTY and ICTR Statutes and has been co-edited by, among others, Professor De Hert, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Jean Flamme, Defence Counsel before various International Criminal Tribunals (ICC, ICTR, STL). Besides Prof. De Hert and Mr. Jean Flamme, Ms. Elisabeth Evenson and Professor William A. Schabas will participate in the seminar. Ms. Evenson is a Senior Counsel for the International Justice Program of Human Rights Watch. Prof. Schabas is a renowned International Criminal Law and Human Rights Law expert, based at Middlesex University, London, and Leiden University.

After the seminar, ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will be awarded a Honorary Doctorate by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
