Campus: Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering campus
Aula D.005

Lecture Series

What does diplomacy mean for a small country like Belgium? On the one hand, its foreign policy is more and more guided by the European institutions and international organizations. On the other hand, cities, regions, and even companies take a more prominent role in the establishment of international relations. Besides this organizational flux, diplomacy seems also to straddle between the pursuit of economic interests and values. Three generations of diplomats will shed their light on the evolution of Belgium’s diplomacy. They will discuss of the major institutional changes, shifts in priorities, and how it might evolve in the future. The meeting takes place on 07 March 2013 in the aula D005 of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

The programme will be as follows:

17h00: Welcome

17h05: Presentations by Didier Reynders, Vice Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Willy Claes, Minister of State and Former Secretary General of NATO, and Stijn Mols, Mertens Counsellor at the Belgian Permanent Representation to the EU.

18h00: Debate and interaction with the audience

19h00: End of meeting
