When Cambridge and Brussels prison researchers meet

During this Master class Prof. Alison Liebling and Dr. Ben Crewe, both from the Prisons Research Centre of the University of Cambridge will act as experts in the field of prison studies, together with Profs. Kristel Beyens and Sonja Snacken from the Crime & Society research group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. They will give feedback to the presentations of the researchers and share experiences with the participants.  This will allow PhD students to improve and refine approaches, methodologies and concepts, as well as to build up an international scientific network.

Alison Liebling is Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Cambridge and the Director of the Institute of Criminology’s Prisons Research Centre. Ben Crew is currently Deputy Director of the Prisons Research Centre. Both scholars are worldwide highly regarded for their contributions to scientific excellence in the field of Penology and Prison Studies in particular. Their main interests lay in the changing shape and effects of imprisonment; the role of values in criminal justice; and in the role of safety, trust and fairness in shaping the prison experience.

The aim of the masterclass is to provide a stimulating environment in which a well-informed (theoretical and methodological) discussion about prison research can be held
between the researchers and experts.

On Thursday afternoon (19 February 2015) and Friday morning (20 February 2015), researchers from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Cambridge University will present their research during 7 minutes presentations, which will be discussed by fellow researchers.
