As a result of the Victor Hugo Project/ICORN @ Universities in Brussels 2014-2015, VUB is happy to invite you to the debate:

Progressive Movements within Islam

Current events in the Middle East and Northern Africa, the threat of radicalism, the refugee crisis, and the changing political climate worldwide are often, by way of political discourse, linked to the Islamic faith. Considering this association, which is often unfounded, looking at the progressive movements within the Islamic faith can prove insightful in the discussion at hand, and perhaps lead to a deeper understanding of how to counter (islamic as well as anti-islamic) radicalism.

Moderator: Prof. dr. Werner de Saeger, Faculté de Droit - Université Libre de Bruxelles & de Mons

  • Ali Amar: Moroccan freelance journalist
  • Michael Privot: Director of European Network against Racism
  • Rachid Benzine: Islamologist and associate researcher at l’observatoire du Religieux

Parts of the debate will be held in French.

Entrance is free, but registration is required (lunch will be provided).
