Nobel prize winner Bob Dylan already wrote that … “We live in a political world, The one we can see and feel, But there’s no one to check, It’s all a stacked deck, We all know for sure that it’s real…”

In our current world, alternative realities are constructed from the perspective of special interest groups, a process that resonates deeply with the tribal nature of human civilisation. Nowadays tribes are everywhere, even in the scientific world, but they are mainly driven by subjectivity and emotion, fuelled by the social media. Against this background, how can PhD students succeed in their quest for objective, reliable insights that remain true across political, national and cultural borders? In our interactive workshop we will list the elements of what could become a survival guide for PhD students, by doing a SWOT analysis of the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of current research practices in the biomedical sciences world. Discussions are especially needed to prioritise the most important elements.
