This 7th Symposium of the Centre for Literary and Intermedial Studies focuses on literary, cinematographic and intermedial city portraits and the (imaginary or real) urban identities they evoke or construct.

The speakers at the examine how various genres give expression to a city’s identity or personality and seek to answer the following questions: How is the portrait of the city constructed in literature? How is the city’s portrait approached intermedially? Which literary-theoretical insights are relevant for the study of city portraits? To what extent do literary texts emphasize the city’s uniqueness or rather ascribe to an urban typology? To what extent do literary texts give rise to a confrontation with the past or to a reflection on (European) culture? To what extent do they evoke the identity construction of peoples and nations or the author’s self-reflection?
