Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (VUB)

Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (VUB) is an interdisciplinary course for students and a series of lectures and activities open to all. The third edition of Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (VUB) explores scopes and impact of new technologies.

Accelerated technological development in the field of ICTs, app, sensoring, etc. are transforming our cities. Digital technologies spread into every corner of the city dwellers’ lives. What impact do they have on the urban public(s) and dynamics? Does connectivity help to strengthen ownership over and participation in the urban sphere? Could datafication thrive urban inclusiveness and sustainability?  What new exclusions and vulnerabilities might arise from digitalization? How do we ensure that digitization benefits the city's livability? What role is there to play for scientists, policymakers, urban designers, active citizens and artists in ‘reclaiming the city’?

On Tuesday 21h of November 2017 Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (VUB) proposes several activities to explore and experience the impact of new technologies on the urban public(s). Benjamin Vandewalle performs <Walking the line>.

From the theatre to the city streets, each of Benjamin Vandewalle’s creations offers new perspectives and experience. In Walking The Line, Vandewalle accompanies you into the city. He takes the lead in a series of purposeful actions: some are banal, while others are rather unconventional. You leave as a group of individuals and gradually transform into one collective body. Through a sequence of tableaux vivants, Walking the Line is a walking performance that gives you a new perspective on the city around you.

Benjamin Vandewalle studied at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp and graduated at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels in 2006. Since early on, the central theme in his work is perception. He creates movement – not only in the performer’s body but also in the spectator’s. His work is about sharing new experiences and perspectives with a large audience. From 2017 to 2021 Benjamin Vandewalle is an artist in residence at Kaaitheater. Concept, creation: Benjamin Vandewalle. Creation, performance: Nelle Hens, Evelien Cammaert, Gaël Santisteva, Cassiel Gaube. Dramaturgy: Jasper Delbecke (SoAP).
