Behind the curtain of exploitation. The lives of victims before, during and after human trafficking

Tuesday, 13 March, 2018 - 16:00 to Tuesday, 13 March, 2018 - 18:00
Campus: Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering campus
Faculty: Recht en Criminologie
Building D
Promotiezaal D2.01
Vrije Universiteit Brussel Research Group on Fundamental Rights and Constitutionalism (FRC) and PAG-ASA – Center for Victims of Human Trafficking

What does it take to become a victim of human trafficking? How can the dream for a better future suddenly transform in a nightmare of exploitation and deprivation of freedom? Why is it so difficult to get out of a situation of inhuman living and working conditions?

The Photo-Voice exhibition tries to answer these questions from the victims’ point of view, and offers a unique opportunity to ‘see’ what human trafficking is from the victims’ perspective: a complicated and distressing experience often too difficult to be explained IN plain words.

The colloquium Behind the curtain of exploitation, organized as part of the exhibition, will provide a broader context to the messages and scenes transmitted by the photos. The speakers will offer insight into the situations that foster precariousness and increased risk of exploitation and into the difficult path to regain the status of free human being.

Welcoming Remarks:

Prof. Paul de Hert (Co-Director, FRC, VUB) & Ms Sarah De Hovre (Director, PAG-ASA)

  • Migration and the risk of exploitation: the fine line between human smuggling to human trafficking, Ms Amy Weatherburn, FRC, VUB
