 Dr Tlili is one of the 2018 visiting research fellows at the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies. Her talk will be broadly focused on her research on bodily and sport politics of and around Arab women in Paris, Tunis and Montreal. 
"My doctoral research (2008) centered on a comparative analysis of bodily and movement issues among women of Arabic-Muslimculture involved in departments of sport and physical education in France and Tunisia. From 2009 to 2012, I conducted research with Pr. Geneviève Rail (at the Simone de Beauvoir Institute at Concordia University in Montreal) on a project focusing on Quebecois Maghrebi women’s bodily discourses.  More specifically, we looked at how women who emigrated from the Maghreb to Montreal discursively construct their body and their health in the context of hegemonic obesity discourses. Engagement with Feminist postcolonial and poststructuralist approaches pushed me to change my theoretical framework in France and to give voice to French young women in underprivileged neighborhoods (Tlili & Delorme, 2014). I thus tried to understand why these young women did not want to practice physical activities by focusing on sport representations and poor quartiers’ obstacles and motivations. At the end we co-constructed recommendations with young women, practitioners, stakeholders and sport institutions. The difference between young women and sport actors’ representations create innovative actions and new opportunity of work."
This talk will give me the possibility to go deeper into different areas of my visiting research-fellowship objectives at VUB (May – July 2018), including: (1) analyses of sport actors and young women, how they construct the inactivity of French young women in ‘at-risk’ areas; (2) a particular focus on the question of Islam in France and representations and discourses about Muslim Women (for example: “prevention of radicalization” Vs leadership & empowerment), and, (3) to investigate how an intersectional framework of teaching could help us create a new context of research, one that is creative and innovative and also to use the outcomes of action research outside of academia (to a new business model?)."
