Europe Day 2019EUROPE DAY 2019: Celebrating 15 Years EU Enlargement

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! On Wednesday 16 October 2019 the VUB International Relations office will launch the first Europe Day and this year's focus will be on the 15th anniversary of the EU's biggest enlargement in 2004 when 10 additional countries joined the European Union. Other countries had joined before and after, but this was one big wave, when Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Ireland, UK, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Finland and Sweden were joined by Cyprus, Malta, Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The day will start at 12 o'clock with food trucks on the esplanade, but also with some adjusted menus in the restaurant. At the same time, we will have a fair in building D (tbc) with stands from the embassies of the countries in question, but also other organisations and players of interest. The idea is to generate some awareness about what these countries have to offer and to look a bit deeper into the options the VUB has with educational institutions there in terms of student exchange, staff mobility and internships.

The fair will finish at 3pm, when we start with an academic session in the 'promotiezaal' (D.2.01), entitled, "15 years after the Eastern enlargement, are we growing together or moving apart?", where a panel of experts will look at how successful this enlargement has been, where things stand now, how the future looks, and also how this enlargement has impacted student exhange programmes. The 1st Europe Day will conclude with drinks at 5pm in building D.  More details will appear here once more information is available.

Please register below for the Academic Panel if you would like to attend. More information on the details of the panel discussion will appear here shortly.
