The world community is confronted with the immense challenge of ensuring an adequate food supply in a sustainable manner, while simultaneously addressing the escalating pressures of climate change and environmental degradation.  As a 2019 UN report on sustainable food systems states: “These issues are interrelated and require a holistic and multi-sectoral approach that involves all relevant actors and addresses all elements across the entire food system”.

In this context, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is developing, in collaboration with other universities, a program for interdisciplinary education, research and public debate on topics relevant to food systems.
The program will:

  • Look at all components of food systems, including production, distribution, consumption and post consumption;
  • Draw on the many disciplines that are represented within the VUB and the collaborating universities;
  • Serve a broad audience, including students, researchers, farmers, EU institutions and the general public.

This initiative has been welcomed with warm interest inside and outside the VUB, and many topics have been suggested to address under that program, such as precision farming, food waste reduction, public awareness and involvement, and developing country perspectives.

You are invited to participate in the upcoming “Food for interdisciplinary thought” debate to discuss the program, suggested topics for discussion and possibilities for funding.

Participation is free of charge but registration is required.
