Science with and for society, that’s what community-based research is about. Participatory research, citizen science, Living Lab, involving civil society organisations within your research… Different forms are possible, different funding mechanisms are suitable (e.g. European: H2020-SWAFS or open call for participatory research projects, Brussels: Innoviris-Co-Create, Flemish: EWI-Citizen Science…).

Ideally, this kind of research is reflected within our educational activities as well. Community based learning (CBL) has been highlighted as a “teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection, to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities”. In this way, academic learning & societal engagement go hand in hand.

UNIVER.CITY is a three-year project ('18 -’20), coordinated by the VUB’s Department of Education and Student Policies, exploring innovative practices, scientific findings, metropolitan networks and pedagogical tools relevant to Community Based and Engaged Learning strategies. An institution-wide learning community was set up to share experiences with and tackle barriers for meaningful CBL. At the end of this academic year, we want to share some findings and explore remaining questions.
