In autumn 2018 the European Commission invited European universities to create interinstitutional networks and develop models for a so called “European University”. This high-profile call marks the next step in internationalising higher education in Europe. Vrije Universiteit Brussel accepted the challenge and started building the EUTOPIA alliance together with our partner universities Univ. of Ljubljana, Univ. of Goteborg, Univ. of Warwick, Univ. Cergy-Paris and Univ. Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.

The VUB is proud that EUTOPIA has been selected by the European Commission. The alliance will receive a grant of €5 million to build a truly European academic network during a pilot project of 3 year (December 2019 - December 2022). VUB and our EUTOPIA partners will move towards a strongly connected European University creating international education, research and networking opportunities for students and staff.

VUB takes the lead in EUTOPIA’s educational strategy. The Learning Community is at the heart of this educational approach and connects students, academic staff and extra academic stakeholders of the EUTOPIA member universities in order to co-create learning content. Each alliance partner will coordinate 5 Learning Communities, based on present curriculum components that comply with the EUTOPIA principles of openness and interaction with internal and external partners. Preparatory meetings with the partner universities resulted in a non-exhaustive list of topics for these learning networks: sustainability and environmental issues, conflicts in global order, issues in European governance, data science, AI and complexity, business development.

EUTOPIAn universities are research driven and therefore the alliance also aims to connect the educational project to the excellence of our research and innovation activities. To foster the integration of the research networks, EUTOPIA will stimulate the gathering of its researchers and promote research mobility. Furthermore, EUTOPIA will share a challenge driven research agenda and enhance innovation capacity by pooling resources and expertise.

EUTOPIA will create value for all partners by realising pilot activities, such as the establishing of the EUTOPIA Research Networks and the EUTOPIA Research Mobility programme, the creation the EUTOPIA collaborative learning platform, the creation of a shared and place-based pool of partners to provide a global platform of cooperation.

Are you interested to support these pilot activities and create the teams needed to establish the learning, knowledge and place-making networks of EUTOPIA? This EUTOPIA focused edition of Food for thought invites you for a free, informal and tasteful networking lunch on Friday the 27th of September, co-hosted by the VUB research, educational and international departments and their vice-rectors.
