St. Verhaegen commemoration 2019

185 years ago, on 20 November 1834, Pierre-Theodore Verhaegen founded the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

VUB rector Caroline Pauwels, ULB rector Yvon Englert, VUB Chairman Eddy Van Gelder and ULB Chairman Pierre Gurdjian invite students, alumni and staff members of the VUB and ULB to take part in the St. Verhaegen commemoration on Wednesday 20 November 2019.

  • 8:00 am Coffee and croissants, VUB U-Residence (Generaal Jacqueslaan 271, 1050 Brussels) at the invitation of the two rectors and the mayor of Elsene Christos Doulkeridis
  • 8:45 am Floral tribute at the monument ‘De Stap’, Braem building (Pleinlaan 2, 1050 Brussel)
  • 9:00 am Departure buses
  • 9:15 am Floral tribute for the executed, Nationale Schietbaan (Kolonel Bourgstraat – 1030 Brussels)
    Floral tribute cemetry of Brussels, at the tomb of Théodore Verhaegen and at the tomb of Frans Kufferath (1140 Brussels)
  • 11:15 am Floral tribute at the ‘Groupe G’ monument and the monument in remembrance of the victims of the babaric regime (Campus Solbosch ULB – Square G)
    Floral tribute at the statue of Théodore Verhaegen and the Francisco Ferrer monument (ULB)
  • 12:00 pm Departure buses to the City Hall of Brussels
  • 12:30 pm Joint session VUB-ULB in the Gothic Room of the City Hall of Brussels, at the invitation of the two rectors and mayor Philippe Close
  • 13:30 pm – Glass of friendship in the Arms Room

As of noon 12:00 am, the students of the ‘Brussels Studenten Genootschap’ of the VUB and the ‘Association des Cercles étudiants’ of the ULB will gather on the Grand Sablon.

At 17:00 pm, a parade leaves on foot from the Grand Sablon to the Beursplein, accompanied by a brass band.

With Saint Verhaegen, we honour the founder of the ULB Théodore Verhaegen and show our gratitude to all those who have defended the philosophy of the university (ULB and VUB) over the past 185 years, even in difficult circumstances.
