Summer School

The Summer Academy for Global Privacy Law 2020 offers a unique programme on international and European privacy and data protection law, made available from Brussels to participants all over the world. Under the title ‘Confronting the New Challenges’, it will review the latest policy and legal developments and explore the state of global privacy law in light of the Covid-19 outbreak and its many implications.

From 22nd to 26th June 2020, the Summer Academy for Global Privacy Law will bring together internationally renowned lecturers, including academics, representatives of European Union (EU) institutions, data protection authorities (DPAs), private companies, lawyers and civil society. The Academy has a policy and legal focus, but integrates interdisciplinary perspectives to equip participants with the necessary insights to understand, and be able to shape, European and global privacy law.

The Summer Academy will engage participants in discussing key developments in the EU legal landscape and key issues under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); instruments such as the Council of Europe Convention 108+ and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR); and the main actors and institutions in the data protection and privacy world – encompassing perspectives from outside the EU and the crucial issue of international data transfers. It will notably review responses to the data protection challenges of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Participation to the Summer Academy 2020 will take place exclusively online. Building on the successful experience of numerous editions of the European Data Protection Law Summer School, it will propose innovative ways of interacting in order to think together about the upcoming challenges of global privacy law.
