Acting according to our core values

There is no culture and no progress without academic and artistic freedom. Defending this freedom is directly related to the core values of our university. No wonder then that the VUB was one of the first universities in Europe with a Refugee Student Programme in 2015 and that our university has been involved in the Scholars at Risk network since 2011.

But what are these initiatives? Which groups do they address? What do they consist in? During Sound of Freedom, scholar at risk Mohammad Al Mohjoub presents and discusses the many aspects, challenges and achievements of these and similar VUB projects.

Explaining, playing, debating

Rector Caroline Pauwels will deliver the opening address of the event, which will be enlivened by the virtuoso Iraqi lute player Khalid Alrawi. Subsequently, Middle East specialist Rudi Vranckx, well-known VRT journalist and honorary doctor of the VUB, will take part in a panel discussion.

In September 2017, Vranckx handed over a large number of instruments donated by Flemish people to the teachers and pupils of a music school in war-torn Mosul. The whole operation, of which he was the initiator, was recorded in a moving tv reportage. In collaboration with illustrator Caryl Strzelecki, Rudi Vranckx also published a gripping graphic novel about it, called 'Mosul'.
