VUB honorary doctorate for Julia Gillard

Uitreiking VUB-eredoctoraat aan Julia GillardOn Wednesday February 11th 2015, VUB presented a honorary doctorate to Julia Gillard, the first female Prime Minister of Australia and worldwide advocate of better education. Gillard received the honorary doctorate for her achievements as a women committed to education and to social inclusion and for the impact of her commitment on the situation of children, youngsters and women worldwide. 

Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia from 2010 to 2013 and no longer active in pure politics, presently holds the chair of the Global Partnership for Education. Since its creation in 2002, this partnership has grown into an organisation

 with 59 member countries. Its objective is to make education more accessible to children all over the world.

As a politician, Julia Gillard paid a lot of attention to education. She introduced many changes in the Australian education system, with focus on children with disabilities. She also installed new standards for a better child care quality

 access to education. and earlier

Gillard was presented her honorary doctorate by VUB rector Paul De Knop after having given a Kapuscinski Development Lecture. The Kapuscinski Development Lectures are a series of high level lectures that contribute to the debate and formulation of the European development policy.

This year in May, VUB will bestow five other honorary doctorates as well.
