VUB PhD student Julien Cousin Saint-Remi awarded Green Chemistry poster prize

VUB PhD student Julien Cousin Saint-Remi awarded Green Chemistry poster prize Ir. Julien Cousin Saint-Remi was awarded the Green Chemistry poster prize at the Ghent Bio-Economy Summer School 2012 for his contribution "Recovery of biobutanol from ABE-fermentations with zeolites". Julien Cousin Saint-Remi is PhD student at the Department of Chemical Engineering (promotor: Prof. dr. ir. Joeri Denayer), where he is developing new and innovative techniques for the downstream processing of biobased products.

In particular, bio-alcohols like bio-ethanol and bio-butanol form a promising alternative to petroleum-based chemicals. A major challenge in the economical production of bio-butanol as chemical or fuel is its separation from the aqueous medium in which it is produced by the fermentation of biomass. In his work, Julien Cousin Saint-Remi is studying the use of novel nanoporous solids for the selective purification of biobutanol.
