University of Patras and Vrije Universiteit Brussel merge their competences

VUB en University of Patras sluiten onderzoeksovereenkomstThe University of Patras and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel have a longstanding and intense joint history of collaboration. To further intensify and facilitate this already successful collaboration, both universities have now expressed their commitment to create a joint research laboratory.

Researching convergent technologies in the ICT sector

The new lab will address complex end-to-end (E2E) ICT systems and investigate technologies for multimedia communication platforms - ranging from low-power visual sensor networks to high-end imaging and visualization systems – and advanced multi-body and UAV robotic platforms. The lab will address convergent technologies in the ICT sector.

Collaboration VUB department ETRO and ECE and CEID departments University of Patras.

The department of Electronics and Informatics (ETRO) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel has a proven track-record in the domain of E2E ICT systems and some of its research teams are embedded in strategic research centers such as iMinds and IMEC. The departments of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), Physics and Computer Engineering & Informatics (CEID) of the University of Patras excel in the domains of signal, speech and audio processing, image and video processing and analysis, computer vision, wireless communications, artificial intelligence, 3D modeling and scene analysis, robotics, and embedded systems.

This new strategic collaboration should enable both partners to strengthen their position in the individual core competence domains and deliver  cross-disciplinary research contributions needed in E2E ICT systems.

The joint laboratory will be chaired by Prof. Peter Schelkens (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and Prof. Athanassios Skodras (University of Patras).
