General information

If you would like to enroll at the VUB, you should first of all submit an application via our online application website.

If you are already a student at the VUB, you should log into your Student Selfservice and click "New application".

If you are a Belgian national with a Belgian diploma (obtained after 2004), please make sure that you apply by using your Belgian eID. We will be able to process your application automatically in that case.

If you are a student with an international diploma, the Admissions Office will need to manually evaluate your diploma and other credentials. You will find more additional information on our main application website.

Document checklist

For a complete application we require at least:
- Your diploma (or enrolment certificate if you have not yet graduated);
- Your official transcript of records;
- A proof of language proficiency (English or Dutch, depending on the programme for which you apply);
- A valid passport;
- Picture.

Please give your documents an understandable name. The files should be in PDF or JPEG and smaller than 2 MB and clearly legible. This will greatly help us to process your application.

If your documents are not in English or Dutch you should provide us with a certified translation. Then send in a scan of the original document and the certified translation.

Most programs also have some special requirements such as:
- A motivation letter;
- An academic recommendation letter (1 or 2 depending on the programme).

Your health insurance is not yet required. You will only need one of you are accepted and come by the VUB in person to enroll.

Enroll as guest student

If you need to follow certain courses as guest student, you may submit an application by consulting this webpage on our website.

It may take some time to process this request. Please submit the application as early as possible as they are processed in chronological order.

Once your application has been approved, the Student Administration will finalise your enrolment.

You will receive codes to activate your NetID once you have been enrolled. The student card and enrolment certificate will be sent to the address you filled out. If you did not fill out an address, we will contact you to pick it up personally.

Application website tips & tricks

  1. Make sure to fill out all the fields in the order they appear. Some fields limit the entries based on the information you fill out.

  2. Getting an error message that your account already exists? That means you already submitted a (partial) application in the past! Try logging into your Student Selfservice with your credentials. You should submit the application with your existing account.
  3. Are you experiencing an error message on the first page that doesn't allow to complete the application?
    - Try creating a new account.
    - Check for any special charactacters (e.g. Japanese alphabet is not supported).
    - Try leaving the bank account details blank.

  4. Is the program choice field empty?
    Try leaving the scholarship section blank and to select 'day classes'. This should enable you to select a program. If not, please provide us with a screenshot of the filled out page so we can check what the problem might be.

  5. What is a proof of statute?
    This refers to your residence permit or visa. It is not a required document for the screening of your application.
    However, if you are accepted you will need a valid visa to enter Belgium.

  6. Can't fill out a certain field? Click the hourglass to the right and select a choice!

Submitting an additional application

If you have applied at the VUB before, you can log into the Student Selfservice with your email address and password of your choice to submit a new one.

You may submit as many applications as you like. However, please bear in mind that you should pay an application fee for every separate application you submit. Once we have received this fee, we will process the application.

Payment confirmation

For general information on the application fee, please consult our main application website.

You will receive a confirmation email when we have received the application fee. Please note that it may take up to 15 working days for an international bank transfer to be completed.

Why should I pay an application fee?

For general information on the application fee, please consult our main application website.

You will be charged an application fee if your previous diploma (or the one you are about to obtain) meets two criteria:
- not obtained in the Flemish community
AND
- does not give direct access to the programme you applied for.

We ask you to pay an application fee of 50 EURO for every application you submit. For example: if you submit 4 applications, you will be asked to pay 4 times 50 EURO. Please note that the payment reference is different per application!

You are exempted from the application fee if you have obtained a scholarship valid at the VUB. If you have been awarded a scholarship, please upload the confirmation in the field below and click "Submit".

Application fee: refund

The VUB requests an application fee of 50 EUR per application you submitted. This means that if you submitted one application for two different programmes, you should pay the application fee per programme (2 x 50 EURO). You may also find more information on this page of our website .

Please make sure you use the correct payment reference and the correct payment reference per application fee.

However, if you are accepted and if you enroll at the VUB, the application fee for that specific programme will be deducted from your tuition fee.

You are exempted from the application fee if you have obtained a scholarship valid at the VUB. If you have been awarded a scholarship, please upload the confirmation in the field below and click "Submit".

How can I obtain a scholarship?

Studying abroad is not always easy or cheap. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel participates in many scholarship programmes offering grants to all levels of study (from Bachelor – Academic Staff), in various regions, both for short and longer stays.

Status update

For more information on the separate stages of your application, please consult our main application website.

After submitting your application, you may go to your Student Selfservice to check your application status. Log in with your email address and the password you chose. Then click on "Admission and registration" and select the programme you have applied for.

Has the status of your applcation not yet changed?

Please note that a letter of acceptance can only be issued once your application has been approved by both the Admission Office and the faculty. Until that time we kindly ask you to wait for us to finalise your application.

Duplicate letter of acceptance

Please note that we can only provide you with a letter of acceptance if you have in fact been accepted. You should not ask for a letter of acceptance if your application has not yet been finalised.

I have been accepted, what now?

Congratulations on your acceptance at the VUB!

We will send a digital letter of acceptance to your email address. In addition, we will send a hard copy to the address you specified if you are an EEA citizen. Non-EEA citizens will receive a scanned copy.

Please check the address on the digital letter of acceptance! If it is not correct, you can click the dropdown list above this page to have it changed.

Why is my acceptance conditional?

Congratulations on your acceptance at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel!

All letters of acceptance are conditional, a non-conditional letter of acceptance is never issued. The standard condition is that you pass by with your original diploma (or legalised copy).

There may be other conditions mentioned on your letter. For example, certain programmes require you to enroll for a preparatory programme.
