Welcome to the PostDoc corner!

Being a PostDocs at the VUB, you belong to a very diverse group researchers, which is reflected by the variety of fields in which we work, our different backgrounds and experiences and the various stages in our postdoctoral careers. Yet, we also have a lot in common and deal with similar uncertainties and questions! These pages will help you to find all relevant information considering postdoctoral researchers.

Discover the VUB PostDoc community, a group of enthusiastics PostDocs that reach out to you across faculty borders, departments and research groups. Because interacting at both a scientific and a personal level with our fellow PostDocs offers nothing but advantages; we can share knowledge and expertise, discuss our career path, or simply make friends for life!

The Postdoc community is carried by VUB PostDoc Ambassadors and tries to create a fun and helpful environment both in real-life as online for all VUB Postdocs. Throughout the year several events are organized to co-create our community (e.g., PostDoc table, PostDoc appreciation day). We also have an online TEAMS community to ask questions, help each other, or support each other. If you want to be part of the online community, you can e-mail to postdoc@vub.be.

Currently, we consist of about 16 postdoctoral researchers representing all faculties from VUB. We meet regularly (physically and/or virtually) to exchange ideas and organize inspiring events throughout the year, such as the annual Postdoc Appreciation Day or regular Postdoc lunch table. The aim of the PostDoc Ambassadors is to break down the walls between the faculties, departments, research groups, and the VUB campuses. We want to give the entire PostDoc community a voice and facilitate the integration of new VUB PostDocs. Essentially, we want to create a true community.

To contact: John Lataire (TEAMS) and Stefaan Verhulst (email).

Step outside your natural habitat and join us at the events organized for you as VUB PostDoc. It’s a great way to meet your fellow PostDocs and to broaden your network. Or join our online TEAMS channel (e-mail to postdoc@vub.be to get access).

“Sleeping Beauty. The prince won’t come” by dr. Karin Bodewitz is an interactive lecture on self-marketing and networking for PostDocs. In this talk, you will have the opportunity to learn about the main characteristics to be considered in order to maximize the benefits of self-marketing and networking. It will cover the basics on what networking is, and how to make it fun - and ventures into very practically applicable tips, like how to better utilize your existing network, who (not) to network with, visibility – credibility – profitability, first impression, how to prepare yourself, from small talk to big talk (from ice breaker to exit), and how to keep up to date. These will come in handy for the next live PostDoc event later on this academic year.

dr. Karin Bodewits (PhD in Biochemistry) founded a company in 2012 that is a seminar and talk provider for researchers and scientists. In this function, she became book author, short story writer, speaker and seminar leader.
