What happens with our electronic equipment after we throw it away? Still too often, our computers, mobile phones and other e-gear get dumped on junkyards here in Belgium or in countries in the global South.
In the past few years, new technologies and procedures have been developed that aim for a more environmentally friendly treatment of e-waste. These innovative technologies, better known as ‘urban mining’, isolate minerals that can be re-used in other equipment. Doing so, this branch of the green economy answers the globally increased demand for rare raw materials.
Our four panel members have very different backgrounds and expertise on the subject and will exchange their experiences during this lunch debate.
Panel:
- Environmental Office VUB
- Raf Custers (GRESEA)
- Barbara Toorens (WorldPC)
- Steven Art (Umicore)
