Keynote

Since the end of June, the city council of  Brussels’ decision to double the size of the traffic-free zone in the heart of the city has  been in effect. With a surface area of fifty hectares, it is one of the largest  pedestrian zones in Europe.

The pedestrian zone and accompanying circulation plan are ambitious and gave rise to many stakeholder discussions. As the testing phase is planned to last eight months, the city is  currently monitoring the traffic situation in order to objectively evaluate and adjust the pedestrian zone.

Els Ampe, Alderwoman of the City of Brussels for Mobility, Public Works and Car Fleet, explains how the pedestrian zone started and how it is  currently being followed up. She will give a unique insight into Brussels’ remarkable mobility project.

This keynote kicks off the series of student presentations related to the Sustainable Mobility & Logistics course.
