Campus: Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering campus
Pleinlaan 5
RHEA & Sport and Society Research Unit
Research Seminar

The next RHEA research seminar will take place next Tuesday, February 16.

This session is dedicated to the theme of Gender and Sport, and is organized together with the Sport and Society Research Unit (Dra. Hebe Schaillée, Dr. Rein Haudenhuyse, Prof. dr. Veerle De Bosscher, Pieter Smets (Sport and Society Research Unit, SASO).

This seminar consists of two parts. In the first part we will briefly discuss the main findings of a recently finalized PhD study “More than just a game? The potential of sport to foster positive youth development among disadvantaged girls”. Using a multi-method research approach the PhD study looked at the relationships between group composition, coach- and peer-created social climate, socio-economic characteristics of participants (i.e. nationality, education, family situation) and developmental experiences (both positive and negative) within sport settings (i.e. Urban Dance and Boxing).
Through an interactive debate we would like to explore possible underlying reasons or explanations  (‘theories’) for the main findings. The second part of the lunch seminar is dedicated to discussing possible areas of collaborative research between Sport & Society and RHEA, both in relation to elite high-performance sport  (e.g.; the class and glass ceiling in elite sports) and grassroots community sports (e.g., identity construction, ethnicity and sport participation).

Time and place: 12-2pm, Pleinlaan 5, room 203.
