Each year the VUB organizes an information session on doctoral (PhD) grants Strategic Basic Research (SB) and we hope herewith to reach out, inspire and encourage our students to engage with science at the VUB.

This year, we will also focus on a new elements introduced in this funding scheme (brief overview below this e-mail). So the information session is not only for students but also for the VUB’s chairmen of the departments and research groups, professors and supervisors of PhD students.

Invited guest speaker is dr. ir. Dirk Otte, FWO Science Policy Advisor Strategic Programme.

A Doctoral (PhD) Grant Strategic Basic Research allows young researchers to develop into strategically thinking and innovation-oriented scientists. Strategic basic research in the context of a PhD grant stands for challenging and innovative research (at PhD level), which, if successful, may in the longer term lead to innovative applications with economic added value (for specific companies, for a collective of companies, or a sector, or in line with the VRWI transition areas)

The call 2016 will be open from June 15, 2016, submission deadline Thursday, September 15, 2016 (05.00 PM). The fellowship starts on January 1, 2017. All information can be found on the FWO website.

Registration: free of charge, but required.

We look forward to welcoming you to one of these information sessions.

Kind regards

Prof. Dr. Patrick De Baetselier

Vice-Rector Research Policy

New elements FWO SB-funding scheme (changes from last year):

  • No more nationality condition.
  • Diploma conditions are introduced; candidates must possess a master diploma from EEA or EU master, obtained max. 5 years ago.
  • Scientific experience of the candidate shall not have exceeded 18 months.
  • Application and oral defense in English (no language choice).
  • The ranking of the candidates will be through a slightly modified scoring system, i.e. the ranking is done by an expert panel (with a panel quorum) and no longer by “overall” panels.
  •  The evaluation criteria are: 1/candidate, 2/project and 3/application potential; evaluation based upon pre-reports-in evaluation project and application potential.
  • There will be fewer evaluation panels (60 instead of 90) thus each panel evaluates more files (min. 12 and Max. 18 files). The number of experts in each evaluation panel is situated around 5 to 6, and part of the panel members are internationally recruited..
  • Each panel ranks upon the results of pre-reports, made available in advance to all panel members.

Each candidate  will be invited to defend his/her application to an international SB expert panel. Per candidate: a 30-minute discussion, including a 5-minute presentation by the candidate of his or her proposal (based upon a general template; in preparation at FWO).
