The Canary in the Coal Mine

vrijdag, 1 juli, 2016 - 12:00 to vrijdag, 1 juli, 2016 - 13:30
Campus: Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering campus

In this lecture, Ewald Engelen will introduce his eponymous popular book recently published with Marianne Thieme – co-founder of, and fraction representative for the political party Partij voor de Dieren [Party for the Animals]. Engelen and Thieme warn against the unsustainability of the political and financial choices underlying our contemporary capitalist system. As canaries in a coal mine they signal the dangers that threaten our future. Most politicians and scientists choose a path of marginal change within a status quo geared towards economic growth and free-market exchange. Respectively approaching the matter from an economic and ecological perspective, however, Engelen and Thieme reach the same drastic conclusions: radical change is needed to save future generations from disaster.

“This manifesto is without doubt the most radical pamphlet having emerged from Dutch politics in recent years” – De Volkskrant

The lecture kicks off an invitation-only workshop organised by the Financial Geography (FINGEO) team at Cosmopolis: Centre for Urban Research. The lecture is followed by an informal network moment. Participation is free, but registration is required via https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1lZkD9w77xepbrriik5P5lulfPkXHwRJI9d7Kqht...
