This research provides a critical analysis of the concept of harmful cultural practices (HCP) by focusing on ‘moralities’ regulating the female body. The empirical research aims at investigating discourses of ‘harm’ in traditional practices such as veiling, as well as those practices which are usually left out in the literature of HCP, such as beauty practices and cosmetic surgeries. The studies on HCP have mainly focused on ‘non-Western’ practices or practices related to ‘cultures’ of the societies dubbed as the Global South. I will investigate discourses and moral understandings of gender, sexuality and embodiment in contexts, widely considered modern, Western or dominated by Western/modern discourses of body management and morality. This qualitative research is conducted among Iranian women and Iranian diaspora in Belgium.
