Open Courses

The course is open for undergraduate students, graduate students and everyone else who is interested in Chinese culture. The main purpose of the course is to introduce the functions of traditional Chinese religions in traditional Chiense society and rethink their roles in the context of contemporary society. The lecture starts from the introduction of the characteristics of  Chinese religions and the basic ideas of 'God' and 'Heaven' in a Chinese context. Then Confucianis, Taoism, Chinese Buddhism and the encounter of Chinese religions with Christianity are studied from a historical perspective. Moreover, the lecture tries to discuss how the traditional religions influence the daily lfe of Chinese people and how they help to face contemporary problems such as ecological crisis and cultural differences in a modern multicultural society.

  • 23/03: The debates on the religious status of Confucianism
  • 30/03: The rise of Taoism as a religion
  • 20/04: The Complementary relationship between Confucianism and Taoism
  • 27/04: The characteristics and the main schools of Chinese Buddhism
  • 04/05: The meeting of Chinese religions and Christianity: From The Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty
  • 11/05: The situation of religion in contemporary Chinese society
  • 18/05: Traditional religions and the daily life of modern Chinese people
  • TBA: Traditional religions, cultural identity, and cultural dialogue 

Summer Camp

The subject courses of the Confucius Institute at the VUB give the opportunity to join the yearly summer camp. Students who attend at least 39 hours of Open Lectures can apply to join the summer camp. More information can be found on the event page of the summer camp of the Confucius Institute at the VUB.
