Brussels Talking Lecture Series

The VUB Communication Studies Lecture Series is a prestigious series of compact two-hour conferences on media and communication in Europe with prominent guest speakers from the European media industry, journalism, academia, NGO’s, and European institutions. The Lecture Series enhances understanding of topical debates about economic, political, technical, legal and societal aspects of media and communication in Europe.

They take place from November 2019 to May 2020, on the VUB Campus in Etterbeek (Brussels Humanities, Science and Engineering Campus). Lectures and roundtables of approximately 45-60 minutes are followed by 45-60 minutes of discussion.

 

2019 PROGRAMME OUTLINE

 

  • 26.11.2019 - Christophe Ginisty – Head of Digital Engagement at OECD - How social media usage have fundamentally shaped our societies in an unexpected way? 
  • 17.12.2019 - Lucia Recalde – Head of Unit, Creative Europe & Media - Challenges and Future of the European Media & Audio-Visual Industries.

All lectures are scheduled in location D0.02 from 4-6pm.

  • 10.03.2020 - Aidan White – Director, Ethical Journalism Network – Ethical Journalism as an Inspiration for Free Expression
  • 17.03.2020 - Ross Biggam - Vice-President Government Relation EMEA, Discovery Communications - Strategic Challenges for the Video Content Sector – Consolidation, Globalisation and Brexit
  • 21.03.2020 – Alberto Alemanno - Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law, HEC Paris, Founder, The Good Lobby - Beyond click-activism: how citizens can lobby the EU through new digital, participatory mechanisms
  • 5.05.2020 - Andrea Renda – Senior Research Fellow CEPS (Center for European Policy Studies), Professor College of Europe – From ethics to policy: will Europe drive the world towards AI for good?
