We are currently developing a policy on Shared Research Infrastructure at VUB.

The term Shared Research Infrastructure envelopes both Core Facilities as well as technology and infrastructure platforms, and embodies: all centrally supported research services as there are technologies, instruments and expertise which are available to the entire VUB research community. This open access will be based on consultable and transparent conditions and through reservation. Via the VUB Research Council, an (impuls)financing and operational framework will be installed in order to improve visibility, quality, economic return, maintenance and accessibility.

Core Facility is an autonomous unit within VUB which transcends research departments or groups and has its own highly qualified staff. These facilities are run by a scientific director flanked bij a scientific advisory committee and a committee of users. It is expected that these facilities will offer high quality services and economically advantageous solutions to cater the needs of VUB's research community. In order to achieve this we believe a business plan, a transparent expense model, a reservation module and user trainings are indispensable. A report containing all these parameters will be delivered to our Research Council on a yearly basis.

Technology and Infrastructure platforms are research services (instruments, technologies, infrastructure,...) which need to be available to the entire VUB Research Community. The use thereof needs to be made possible within a reasonable timeframe and needs to be based on a transparent expense model. The use will also be reported yearly to the VUB research Council.

We invited VUB-alumna Dr. ir. Kim Remans who runs the Protein Expression and Purification Core Facility in Heidelberg (Germany) to this Food for Thought to share with us the Core Facility policy of the leading European Molecular Biology Laboratory.
The purpose of this edition of Food for Thought is to gather VUB-researchers on this topic and to discuss aspects of future Core Facility-policy at VUB.
