Internationale conferentie

The partners of the RESCALED movement look forward to welcoming participants to this launch conference hosted by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) on April 10th, 2019. Over 150 expected delegates will reflect on how to promote penal transition towards detention houses, small-scale, differentiated in terms of security level and programs and integrated in the local community.

The international launch conference will create opportunities to share experiences and ideas, paving the way for stronger synergies to mainstream community detention houses as alternative to prisons in Europe. Please visit our website www.rescaled.net for additional info about us and our goals.

The partners of the RESCALED movement will build on the outcomes of the launch conference and will present the conclusions of the first day to members of the European Parliament and the international press on April 11th.

Who we are: RESCALED is a social movement for small scaled and community integrated detention in Europe. Together with many others, we believe that imprisonment should be constructive for society, for victims and for prisoners. Large penal institutions are expensive, not suitable to prepare prisoners’ reintegration and often unsafe and unhealthy for those who live and work inside the walls. Despite this common knowledge, however, this kind of detention is still common practice in Europe, in the absence of a suitable alternative.

Our goals: RESCALED aims at replacing all large problematic prisons by detention houses. These detention houses are small-scale, differentiated in terms of security level and programs and integrated in the local community.

Our work: We are not just dreamers, we have already started this transition. On April 10, 2019, we launch RESCALED and we are inviting you to get informed and/or involved. The launch conference will take place in Brussels (at Vrije Universiteit Brussels) and will bring together 150 people from at least six European countries to exchange ideas about this penal transition.

RESCALED partners: De Huizen, Restorative Justice NL, Dat is Helder, Avans University of Applied Sciences, Mens & Strafrecht, APAC, Penitentiary Institution of Almelo, FARAPEJ, CHAINS, BONJO, Recovery&Return
