Neurosciences and beyond

Our brain is a fantastic and superingenious but complex organ that is responsible for perception, information processing, management and control. The brain is the source of our cognitive functions, emotions, memory, imagination and creativity. It controls our vital functions.

Within neurosciences, we try to understand the complex functioning of the healthy brain, with the ultimate goal to unravel and cure brain disorders. Around 179 million people in Europe suffer from a brain disease. Many of these disorders have a major impact on patients and families, cannot be cured yet and represent a social and socio-economic challenge. Examples of these conditions are depression, dementia, stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and addiction.

Neuroscience is a very fascinating research domain, with interfaces with many other scientific disciplines. Precisely because of this multidisciplinarity, neuroscience is an excellent discussion topic for this 'food for thought'. Brain research generates big data and interesting datasets for machine learning and artificial intelligence. But how can a healthy, sporty lifestyle ensure a "healthier" brain? How do psychotherapy, meditation and mindfulness affect our brain functions? What is the influence of brain diseases on accountability in legal issues? And on decision-making ability for taking end-of-life decisions? How many ethical and philosophical issues cannot be discussed in this domain given the rapid scientific evolutions?

The Food for Thought is hosted by Prof. S. Engelborghs & Prof. I. Smolders.
