November 2023

Construction Cultures in the City

In connection to the ongoing StadsSalonsUrbains Lecture series ‘Rewind FastForward’, the research group of the project Re-building Brussels (1695-2025): The construction sector as an engine for social inclusion and circularity (VUB) is organising a research seminar with Prof. Howard Davis (University of Oregon). We will trace 'construction cultures' throughout the years, looking into historical processes of circularity through the culture of material reuse and deconstruction in Brussels, the role of diverse actors in the building sector and contemporary examples of place-based construction material hubs.

The seminar will kick off with three presentations by the PhD researchers of the Re-building Brussels team, who will present an overview of Brussels construction sector, exploring questions of material flows, building conversions, circularity, and the spatial embeddedness for these practices. Following, Prof. Howard Davis will provide insights on the role of trust and craftsmanship in the building sector, themes that he will explore further during the StadsSalonUrbains lecture #2, at 5.30 pm at Beursschouwburg café.

Would you like to join for the seminar? Have a look at the programme here. Due to a limited number of seats, please confirm your presence before Friday November 3 via email to Stephanie.Van.de.Voorde@vub.be.
