Research and education with regional impact
VUB aan Zee bridges the gap between research, education and real-world application. Researchers here focus on offshore wind energy, marine technology, marine sciences and coastal and climate research. The hub also provides a permanent base for research in AI and urban innovation, water management and the sustainable blue economy. Engineers working in North Sea wind farms use the facility as their operational base.
At the same time, VUB aan Zee serves as a space for connection and exchange. Students have access to study and co-working areas, professionals take part in executive courses and postgraduate programmes and young people are introduced to science and STEM through workshops and hands-on activities.
A strong partnership
VUB aan Zee is built on an equal partnership with the City of Ostend and the Port of Ostend.
The city is providing 500 m² of centrally located space, laying the foundation for a long-term academic presence with room to grow.
This close proximity strengthens the link between education, research and the region. Ostend and its port are heavily investing in technological and sustainable sectors, driving up demand for scientifically trained professionals. Having a physical presence in the city also makes it easier to connect academic expertise with the real-world challenges faced by both the city and the port.
Location
Just a short walk from the station, the area blends vibrant city life with open space. The coast is always close, with the Mercator Marina just around the corner. You'll also find Maria Hendrikapark nearby - a spacious, leafy park that's perfect for a walk, a quiet break or working outdoors.
