The VUB is a member of the European university network EUTOPIA. This membership provides researchers with extensive international opportunities for academic collaboration.

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel has been part of EUTOPIA for several years now, a network linking ten universities from across Europe. The alliance’s aim can be summed up simply: to strengthen institutions through structured collaboration. For the VUB, this means that research, teaching and staff exchange increasingly take place within an international context.
EUTOPIA is not an abstract policy initiative. It is a practical partnership that has a daily impact on how people within the university work and learn. From research funding to educational innovation, and from staff mobility to shared policy decisions, the VUB is part of a wider collective through this alliance.
The European university network does not focus on a single project or one form of collaboration, but rather on a broad range of initiatives. Researchers no longer operate from a single university, but within a European framework. This approach makes it easier to set up large-scale research projects that require international partners. It also gives teams improved access to European funding programmes, which typically impose high standards in terms of collaboration and scale.
Shared teaching materials
There are also significant changes for students and lecturers. Universities within EUTOPIA jointly develop teaching materials and share academic programmes. This allows students to explore different perspectives more easily, while lecturers can experiment with new teaching methods. The network also encourages staff to spend time working at partner institutions. This mobility brings fresh insights and fosters a better understanding of how other universities are organised.
Across campuses, a culture is emerging in which disciplines connect more readily. Many contemporary challenges—such as climate change, digital security and healthcare—require expertise from multiple fields. EUTOPIA helps facilitate this cross-disciplinary exchange by bringing together researchers from different institutions, both physically and digitally.
Behind the scenes
The network also plays an important role behind the scenes. Universities exchange experiences in governance, organisation and policy. They share insights, for example, on student support, research infrastructure and digital services. By learning from one another’s approaches, institutions aim to operate more efficiently and respond more effectively to societal expectations.
EUTOPIA seeks not only to enable individual projects, but above all to build a long-term partnership. The network is designed to ensure that universities are better positioned within a rapidly evolving European higher education landscape. For the VUB, this means greater international visibility and more opportunities for its students, researchers and staff.
