Prof Jan Steyaert, full professor at the Faculty of Science and Bioengineering Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), has been awarded the six-yearly VUB Roger Van Geen Prize for his outstanding scientific career and his remarkable contribution to translating biotechnological research into societal value.

The prize is awarded by the VUB Research Council to a ZAP-member (independent academic staff) whose work has had a lasting impact on society. Professor Steyaert fits that profile perfectly with his pioneering work on nanobodies – small antibody fragments derived from camelids. This innovative technology has found applications in both the medical and agricultural sectors.

After earning his PhD in biochemistry at VUB, Steyaert became a leading global authority in structural biology and biotechnology. He leads the VIB-VUB Centre for Structural Biology, where he and his team unravel the structure of proteins at the atomic level. His work has led to the creation of three successful spin-off companies: Ablynx, Biotalys and Confo Therapeutics. These companies have transformed fundamental research into concrete solutions in areas such as inflammatory diseases, cancer treatment and crop protection.

Steyaert combines deep fundamental research with a strong focus on societal valorisation. He has successfully bridged the gap between academic research and the market, earning multiple international awards in the process. His work is cited worldwide and continues to inspire scientists and entrepreneurs to put science to work for society.

The awarding of the Roger Van Geen Prize highlights the importance of fundamental academic research that drives innovation with real societal impact. Prof Jan Steyaert’s career proves that scientific excellence and social relevance can go hand in hand.

The award ceremony will take place on 5 May 2025 during an internal event.*
