With this joint honorary doctorate, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université libre de Bruxelles honour Amélie Nothomb, a ULB alumna, for her remarkable literary work. In her internationally celebrated books, she weaves personal history with Brussels-inspired settings, making profound human and cultural themes accessible to a wide audience.
Her work has reached readers worldwide while leaving a lasting mark on contemporary literature.
"In my books, Brussels becomes a living character: familiar, contradictory, and always in motion"
About her career
Amélie Nothomb was born Fabienne Claire Nothomb in Kobe, Japan. Because of her parents’ diplomatic work, she spent her childhood there and in other Asian countries.
She made her debut in 1992 with Hygiène de l’assassin, a novel that immediately established her in Francophone literature. Since then, Nothomb has published almost yearly, often drawing on autobiographical inspiration and characterized by a sharp, idiosyncratic style. With titles such as Stupeur et Tremblements, Ni d’Ève ni d’Adam, and Premier sang, she has gained a broad international readership.
Her work is translated and awarded worldwide and is read both literarily and philosophically. Today, she is regarded as one of the most influential contemporary Francophone authors, with an oeuvre that continuously explores the boundary between personal experience and universal questions.
