The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has elected its rector for the next four years. With 79.30% of the votes, current rector Jan Danckaert can count on the clear support of staff and students to lead the university again from September 2026. “The coming four years must focus on the future, on new opportunities, new forms and ideas. Because we all shape the future together.” The rectoral election took place from 20 April to 4 May 2026.

Danckaert was the only candidate running for his own succession. This dampened electoral excitement on campus, but it did not prevent the university community from expressing its views on the future of the VUB.

In all five electoral groups, the required quorum was reached, with the following turnout results:

  • Independent Academic Staff (ZAP): 68.94% (required: 50%)
  • Other Academic Staff (OAP): 37.17% (required: 20%)
  • Students with degree contracts: 12.52% (required: 10%)
  • Administrative and Technical Staff (ATP): 62.33% (required: 20%)
  • Staff of the University Hospital (UZ Brussel): 14.74% (required: 5%)

Each voter could indicate whether they were ‘in favour’ or ‘not in favour’ of the candidacy and the proposed university project. In total, Jan Danckaert obtained 79.30% of the weighed votes across all electoral groups, thereby also securing the required absolute majority. He will continue his mandate.

“It is encouraging, especially in difficult times, to have such broad support. The university community has given me a strong mandate, which is necessary for the difficult conversations that still lie ahead, both internally and externally. This campaign has also made it clear to me that support must be earned anew every single day,” said Danckaert.

A pioneering university
Danckaert campaigned on his policy plan “VUB: a pioneering university at the heart of Europe”. In it, he emphasised how the VUB has consistently taken on a pioneering role throughout its history—in groundbreaking research, innovative education programmes, and strong societal engagement. He intends to continue this ambition without compromise, despite the significant budget cuts facing the university community.

“Let us continue to work together on the future of the VUB. We may disagree on many things, but we must always be able to reach consensus, because we live in a time in which thoughtful and decisive action is required to remain relevant. Excellent, visionary, and driven by values.”
