Become a mentor at Duo for a Job!

VUB is looking for staff and alumni aged 50 and over. Do you value social cohesion? Would you like to change the life of a young person with a migrant background while enriching your own? Then Duo for a Job is for you.

Young people with a migrant background currently face enormous difficulties in finding employment. This is due to unequal access to the labour market. On the one hand, they experience the challenges that many jobseekers may face: a lack of self-confidence, a limited or non-existent social or professional network, little or no work experience, and so on. On the other hand, they also encounter a number of specific obstacles linked to their migrant background or origin. These include language barriers, difficulties in having qualifications and experience gained abroad recognised, and experiences of discrimination based on origin. The coronavirus crisis has made the situation even worse, as there are fewer job opportunities and more social and financial problems among young people with a migrant background. Access to public services has also become more difficult. A mentor can make a real difference in the search for a good job. As a proud VUB alumnus, you can therefore play an important role.

In practical terms, through Duo for a Job you volunteer to become a mentor to a young person with a migrant background. You guide them in their search for employment and support them where necessary. For six months, you meet weekly for two to three hours. During these meetings, you assess what the young person needs. This may range from help with drafting a CV, to preparing for a job interview, to showing them how to present their strengths effectively. At present, due to the coronavirus measures, these meetings take place online. The young people can greatly benefit from all the support and guidance they can get. Your experience can truly make an important difference. So do not hesitate and become a mentor with Duo for a Job.
