African Liberation Day commemorates the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as the African Union. Various counties on the African continent, as well as around the world, celebrate it every year. At the VUB we spend more days on it, to give as much information as possible.

There are two types of information sharing during the African Liberation Week. Documentaries about Africa on the one side, and presentations given by experts and diplomats on the other. “We want to highlight the different aspects of all aspects of the African continent”, says ASCOM chairperson Tinos Chimondo. “We have guest speakers specialized in politics, academics and social issues to offer a wide range of information.”

Everyone is welcome during African Liberation Week. ASCOM created its first event one year ago. While last year African Liberation Day was meant to get to know the organisation, this year is about putting the organisation on the VUB map. ASCOM is still growing every day. At the moment there are about 150 members.

The opening event will take place on the 21st of May with video documentaries. On the 22st the country flags of the represented students at the VUB will be raised. In the evening you can watch a lecture about Nelson Mandela, who would celebrate his 100th birthday this year. And don’t forget to stop by the barbecue on the 24th at 20.30 to taste some delicious African products! You can find the whole program here.
