Sweden naturalised Ahmadreza Djalali, the Iranian professor and VUB guest lecturer detained in Tehran on charges of espionage, in order to prevent the execution of his death sentence. Iran then reported that it does not recognise his dual nationality and that Dr Djalali will continue to be treated as an Iranian citizen. Meanwhile, a new procedure was initiated before the Iranian Supreme Court to reconsider the death penalty against Professor Djalali. There is therefore still hope for our Swedish-Iranian colleague’s case.

VUB and UZ Brussel continue to put friendly but sustained pressure on the Iranian authorities. In that framework, we want to organise this mass card-writing campaign.

Our ambition is to send hundreds of cards to Vida, dr. Djalali’s wife, in Sweden. With statements of support for her and her husband, with messages of hope, and to show that we continue our fight for Ahmadreza.

Through Amnesty International, our campaign will be communicated to the Iranian media. And we will of course also inform the Iranian embassy about our card-writing campaign.

Dear dr. Djalali, Dear Ahmadreza,
We do not give up the fight.
You deserve a fair trial and a presumption of innocence.
[OF: I keep standing for justice and against the death penalty.]
[OF: I condemn Iran’s violation of fair trial rights.]
Never give up hope!

Dear Mrs. Djalali, Dear Vida,
In Belgium and elsewhere in Europe, we keep believing in your husband.
We stand with you and will never give up the fight for justice.
Never give up hope!
