Starting from 2020, you can now buy a day pass and register your vehicles registered abroad after driving in the LEZ, until midnight the next day. Also, violations against the tightened access criteria (diesel Euronorm 3) will be fined from 1 April 2020.
If your vehicle does not meet the access criteria of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ), you can buy a day pass and have access to the Brussels-Capital Region. Since the 1st of January 2020, it is possible to buy the day pass by midnight the day after using the LEZ. So the pass can be purchased in advance of entering the LEZ OR on the following day. Example: if I drive through the LEZ on the 3rd of January with a non-compliant vehicle, I have until the 4th of January at midnight to buy a pass.
The same applies to the mandatory registration of all vehicles registered abroad (except for vehicles registered in the Netherlands). Since the 1st of January 2020, it is possible to register a vehicle registered abroad (before midnight) on the day after using the LEZ. Users must register before entering OR the day after entering the Low Emission Zone. Vehicle registration is free and valid for three years, provided that the vehicle information does not change. The vehicle registration certificate is required to register. Example: if I drive in the LEZ on the 3rd of January with a foreign-registered vehicle, I have until midnight on the 4th of January to register it.
The transition period for the tightened access criteria ends, starting from the 1st of April 2020 diesel vehicles under the Euro 3 standard will be fined. Vehicles running on diesel under the Euro 0, 1, 2 and 3 standard or petrol under the Euro 0 and 1 standard are banned from entering the zone. You can find all information on the webpages of the LEZ.
