Why an honorary doctorate?
At a time when academic freedom is under pressure, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université libre de Bruxelles want to highlight the vital role of art, free expression and critical thinking in an open society.
By awarding a joint honorary doctorate to Paul Van Haver, both universities recognise the impact of the artist known as Stromae, who brings societal issues such as inequality, identity and mental health to a wide audience.
As both a Brussels-based and international voice, Stromae also embodies the multilingual and diverse character of the city. His work reflects creative freedom, authenticity and engagement — values that lie at the very heart of the universities.
"We need to break through codes and barriers, including those between communities and subgroups"
About her career
Paul Van Haver, better known as Stromae, was born in 1985 in Etterbeek and grew up in Brussels. His stage name is a verlan variation of maestro, reflecting his musical versatility. He gained international recognition in 2009 with the global hit Alors on danse, which topped charts across many European countries.
With the albums Cheese (2010), Racine carrée (2013) and Multitude (2022), Stromae developed a distinctive style that blends electronic music, hip-hop and chanson with sharp observations about identity, relationships, fatherhood and mental health. Songs such as Papaoutai, Formidable and Santé have become iconic for their combination of accessible melodies and socially critical lyrics.
Beyond music, Stromae has built a strong visual and conceptual universe. Through the creative collective Mosaert, he connects music with fashion, graphic design and video, carefully shaping the complete artistic vision behind his work. His creations transcend genres and disciplines and have had a lasting impact on the international music and cultural landscape.
