Across generations and borders
Oceans do not stop at national boundaries. Nor do the challenges we face from rising sea levels. This makes ocean research and management an international challenge that requires committed professionals working together worldwide on sustainable solutions for the ocean, climate, and society.
With OceanConnectXL, VUB aims to:
- Strengthen research and policy-oriented work on capacity building in ocean governance, with themes such as coastal management, fisheries, and climate mitigation;
- Support ocean professionals in developing “blue skills” and international competencies through targeted training and learning pathways;
- Build a network of researchers and professionals trained in Flanders over the past 40 years, and connect them with colleagues worldwide, in collaboration with the OceanTeacher Global Academy (OTGA) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.

Flanders as a driver
OceanConnectXL is an International Cooperation Actions (ICA) project funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). Within this project, Flanders plays a connecting and supporting role by:
- Bringing together early-career and experienced ocean professionals in an intergenerational network;
- Strengthening the role of the OceanTeacher Global Academy (OTGA) in training ocean professionals and researchers;
- Promoting and embedding sustainable international collaboration in ocean research and management in the long term.
In doing so, the project contributes to the objectives of the UN Ocean Decade, which focuses on ten major societal challenges for a sustainable ocean.
