The condition of VUB visiting professor Ahmadreza Djalali remains extremely worrying. After the recent American‑Israeli attacks in Iran, the guards of the Evin prison in Tehran have fled, the detainees have no food and are living in great fear. His wife reported this to VRT News after a brief phone call with Djalali.

Djalali is currently staying in the medical ward of the prison. He is extremely weakened after years of detention. VUB professor Gerlant van Berlaer, colleague and close friend of Djalali, emphasises how critical the situation has now become. “We are very concerned about his condition. He has been imprisoned for almost 10 years, in the worst possible circumstances. So he is very weak… Even if he were able to escape, we fear he would no longer manage because he is so weakened.”
